Student Band in Residency Program

The Trez Music Band in Residence is a scholarship opportunity awarded to Kat Carlsen to provide her with more performance opportunities and coaching to strengthen her musicianship. The band consists of all Trez Music students, selected by Kat to perform with her.

The group plays Kat’s original music as well as covers in a range of genres, from pop to funk. Different instructors from Trez work with the Band in Residence to help them hone their skills. The band will perform gigs in the area until Kat goes to college in 2014.

Kat Carlsen is a pianist and singer in the Mechanicsburg area, and a graduate of Mechanicsburg Area Senior High School, class of 2013. She took classical piano lessons for six years before discovering her passion for jazz piano. During her four years of high school, she switched her focus entirely to jazz and started performing with the Trez Music Jazz All Stars and her school jazz band. During the summer of 2012, Kat decided to start singing and accompanying herself so she could perform solo gigs in her community. She is currently taking a gap year to study music more intensely and develop her musical style. One of the many projects she has taken on is fronting the Trez Music Band in Residence, providing piano and lead vocals. She hopes to continue studying music, with an emphasis on composition.
